Matt is a guitarist and composer based in London who is involved in a wide variety of creative projects encompassing genres such jazz, folk, contemporary classical, improvised and world music.
Originally growing up in rural Dorset, Matt moved to London in 2013 to attend the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama on a scholarship, where he had the privilege of studying jazz and classical guitar, being taught by some of the UK's finest musicians including John Parricelli, Phil Robson, Mike Outram and Colin Oxley. After completing an undergraduate degree, Matt was awarded an Artist Fellowship of the school, an honorary additional year in association with the school to enhance professional artistic development. Matt has also since privately studied and received mentoring from Mary Halvorson, Skúli Sverrisson and Jorge Rossy.
Matt has regularly performed in a number of world renowned venues and festivals including concerts at: Wigmore Hall, The Barbican Centre, Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, The Vortex Jazz Club and Cadogan Hall.
'The Matt Hurley Group' - A drummer-less chamber quintet that combines intricate long from compositions with open group improvisation. The ensemble has just finished making their debut album, which is set to be released in 2025.
Matt is also in demand as a session musician, recording for high profile Media companies such as 'Mcasso'. Recent recording highlights include recordings for; BBC One, BBC Maida Vale Studios, BBC Radio 4, Sky Sports, Channel 4 and NBC.
A highly versatile and creative musician with an eclectic range of influences including Bill Frisell, Wayne Shorter, Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Bob Dylan, Björk, Keith Jarrett, Meredith Monk, Don Cherry, Radiohead and Joni Mitchell.
